Overview

Aspect partnered with Marlin to deliver its Christmas Appeal across two waves of direct mail, centred on a deeply personal story that highlights the life-changing impact of early autism diagnosis and support.

The appeal follows Tom’s lived experience as an Autistic person, using his childhood photos and reflections to show how delays in diagnosis can shape a child’s entire future. Rather than presenting autism as a problem to be fixed, the campaign focuses on the role of understanding, support and community in helping Autistic children thrive.

Working closely together, we developed a sensitive, story-led appeal that balances honesty with hope, and positions giving as a way to ensure more children receive the right support at the right time.

The Challenge

For many families, autism diagnosis comes too late. Limited access to assessments, lack of understanding and systemic barriers can mean years without the right support, affecting education, mental health and long-term wellbeing.

Aspect needed a Christmas Appeal that could communicate urgency without fear, and impact without exploitation. The story had to be truthful and emotionally resonant, while respecting Autistic identity and avoiding language that places blame on the individual.

The campaign also worked across two waves of direct mail, maintaining continuity while giving supporters a clear reason to respond quickly.

The Solution

Working closely with Aspect, we shaped the Christmas Appeal around Tom’s lived experience, using a chronological, album-style narrative to show how timing and support can shape a life.

In this appeal, we introduced Tom’s childhood through photographs and reflection, including a deliberate visual gap representing the years where support was missing. This absence becomes a powerful reminder of what can happen when diagnosis comes too late. The line Never too early. Sometimes too late. anchors the appeal and reinforces the need for timely action.

The Results

The Christmas Appeal gave Aspect a clear, emotionally resonant platform to communicate urgency while remaining respectful of Autistic identity.
