Organisational context for the position:

Charities are a wonderful vehicle for creating change because they empower ordinary people to become advocates and supporters of causes. We created Marlin to help charities get people to join them, and create movements to effect the change we want to see in the world.

As a group of committed people with shared values, Marlin works on these two knotty problems, all day and every day: How do we get people to join charities as advocates and supporters? And how do we keep them?

 

The role:

Design has the power to help important messages be seen, and to win hearts and minds. 

Marlin is looking for a talented Senior Print & Digital Designer who can develop ideas, work to a creative brief, take a project from start to finish, and who can produce attractive, persuasive visual communications within tight deadlines.

The role covers 3 key areas, including conceptual and creative development, drafting and design, and contributing to agency productivity and profitability. 

The successful candidate will be someone capable of creating across print and digital outputs and developing UI skills.. As an agency that continues to create detailed Direct Mail communications for charities, understanding how to design for print is essential.

Your responsibilities will include:

Conceptual and Creative Development

  • Conceptualising and executing creative ideas;
  • Actively contributing to brainstorms and the creative approach and exploring ideas to create impactful designs that get noticed;
  • Responding to a creative brief and considering the most effective ways to reach target audiences by creating tailored communications;
  • Articulating ideas to colleagues and confidently presenting work to clients;
  • Working with third parties, such as photographers, illustrators and animators.

Drafting/Design

  • Independently creating designs based on client briefs;
  • Developing creative ideas, as well as knowing how to integrate team mates’ ideas to create engaging and appealing designs (supported by an Art Director);
  • Demonstrating excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and programs including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator and using them to work quickly and efficiently;
  • Clarifying creative briefs and working closely with the creative team to incorporate feedback;
  • Having an excellent awareness of the client’s audience and being responsible for determining whether work will meet client objectives;
  • Demonstrating strong time management and managing multiple projects with competing priorities;
  • Working well under pressure, meeting delivery deadlines and adhering to other project constraints;
  • Receiving, interpreting and actioning both internal and client feedback to make designs ready for approval, ensuring there are no mistakes and that project status is communicated;
  • Demonstrating strong typographic skills and a solid understanding of grid systems to create balanced designs with clear hierarchies;
  • Proactively ensuring artwork is consistent, accurate, error free, that brand guidelines are adhered to, formats are correct, and that DM folds correctly and fits into envelopes;
  • Working to a high standard where designs are ready to be produced in different media;
  • Preparing final artwork for printing, display and or online publication.

Digital design

  • Creating compelling front end digital artwork and digital assets to size and scale;
  • Showing a good understanding of digital best
  • practice;
  • Showing a good understanding of UX and best practice placement of design and assets on-site to remove friction in the customer journey.

  • Be capable of taking a project from concept to Finished Art
  • Know how to create outstanding design, with strong, balanced layouts, clear hierarchies, and refined, well crafted typographic detail;
  • Have excellent attention to detail, ensuring nothing is missed and work is output to the highest standards;
  • Have strong time management skills, experience working on multiple projects with competing priorities, and are able to manage your time effectively to meet deadlines.

 

Your work experience and skills:

  • 5+ years professional design/agency experience;
  • Experience in print and digital is essential
  • High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite on a Mac platform (Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator); 
  • Understanding of Figma and Canva is desirable;
  • Developing UI skills is desirable;
  • Bachelor’s degree or formal qualifications in design.
  • NFP experience preferred.
